Alister
MacKenzie's contribution to New Zealand.
|
|
Titirangi Golf Club put
New Zealand on the world golf map—but not immediately. First conceived
in 1914, Titirangi hired the prominent English-American course designer
Dr. Alister MacKenzie (1870-1934) to redesign its original course in
1926. MacKenzie, a Yorkshire physician turned golf course architect,
learned his craft in association with the legendary H. S. Colt in
England before emigrating to the United States in the 1920s and pursuing
a solo golf architecture career. Although Dr. MacKenzie was not
especially accomplished as a golfer, he was able to envision how best to
adapt the natural features of a property to the challenge of the game.

Central
Ireland (1927) and Blairgowrie Rosemount in
Central Scotland (1927), Cypress Point in California (1928), Royal
Melbourne West (1931), and, most famously, Augusta National in Georgia
at the request of Bobby Jones in 1933. The good doctor found the site at
Titirangi “exceptionally well adapted for golf: undulating, without
being hilly”.
Although a course building surge has swept New Zealand in recent
years adding several world class courses to the country’s roster of top
courses, Titirangi Golf Club still makes New Zealand’s top ten list,
despite being relatively short (at 6,616 yards) by modern championship
golf standards. MacKenzie’s time-tested and now very mature design at
Titirangi, therefore, has proved that, with golf at least, longer isn’t
necessarily better.

THE MACKENZIE
CHALLENGE:
At Titirangi, Alister MacKenzie designed four par-3 holes, two on each
nine, all of similar length, but each facing a different point of the
compass. Titirangi Golf Club invites visitors to accept its MacKenzie
Challenge—recording par or better on each of the four compass threes:
the 4th (160m, 175 yards), 7th (170m, 186 yards),
11th (161m, 176 yards), and 14th (168m, 184 yards)
holes.

THE REGION:
Auckland
is New Zealand’s largest city, with fully one-third the population of
the nation within its limits. As such, it is New Zealand’s commercial
and social center, with many of the nation’s major corporations
headquartered here. Auckland is a university city, with a youthful
population and dynamic nightlife centered in the harbor district, around
Sky City, and in Parnell Village and across the harbor in Devonport.
There are numerous museums, excellent restaurants, and trendy boutiques
scattered throughout Auckland. Aucklanders are noted outdoorsmen, fond
of sports of all kinds: tennis, golf, rugby, soccer, cricket, running,
fishing, swimming, and, especially, sailing. Set as it is on an isthmus
between two oceans (the South Pacific and the Tasman), Auckland has
beaches, islands, and open water enough for its burgeoning population
and many more to come. Auckland is also a small but important
wine-producing region of New Zealand, noted for its rich red cabernets
and bright chardonnays. |
