1 mile south of Thurles town on the N62 Cork Road. THE HISTORY: Though the Thurles (pronounced TER-less) Golf Club dates from 1909, it only relocated to the 218-acre Turtulla site in 1944. The Turtulla parkland course was designed by J. McMlister, who molded the course effectively to the natural terrain. Its basic layout has stood the test of time. Over the subsequent half-century, wise tree planting has ensured that each hole has developed its individual character. THE COURSE AND SOME NOTABLE HOLES: Thurles is neither especially long, nor wet. Its primary challenge is its mature woodland setting, which has grown tighter over its 50+ years of history. Key holes are its four excellent par-3s and the fearsome 498-yard par-5 18th, with an out-of-bounds along the length of its left side. Thurles begins oddly with two par 5s back-to-back, but otherwise its 14 par-4s average short, if tight, between 305-421 yards. Essentially an inexpensive, relaxing, friendly, local course, Thurles also provides a respected test of golf which occasionally hosts national and provincial championships. THE REGION: Thurles (pop. 8,500) is the principal town of eastern County Tipperary. It lies in country both rich in scenery and providing some of Irelands finest farmland. Nearby are several notable Irish attractions: the legendary stronghold of the Rock of Cashel, the beautiful Holycross Abbey, and the strong fortress of Cahir Castle. There are also a number of scenic drives, which will take you to places like the Glen of Aherlow, Lough Derg, the Silvermines Mountains, or The Vee with breathtaking views.
