FIORDLAND LODGING
TE ANAU, FIORDLAND
SOUTH ISLAND, NEW ZEALAND
Quality accommodations in a quiet,
residential location within 5-10 walking minutes of services. Fabulous touring location in
the principal town of Fiordland.
LOCATION: Fiordland is New Zealands best known, and, arguably, its
most remarkable national park. A region of great lakes, snowcapped peaks and deepwater
fjords, Fiordland has been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Located on the
southwestern corner of New Zealands South Island, Fiordland is blessed by a remote
location that helps keep it pristine despite the ever-increasing pressures of tourism.
ACTIVITIES: Visitors come to Fiordland from around
the world primarily for two reasons: sightseeing and long-distance walking. Among the most
popular tourist sites in New Zealand are the regions fjordsmistakenly named
"sounds"Dusky Sound, Doubtful Sound, and, especially, Milford Sound, where
a half-dozen large cruise boats and numerous helicopters and fixed wing aircraft are kept
busy virtually every day of the year hauling hundreds of day and overnight passengers past
such famous landmarks as Mitre Peak around the fjord out to its exit into the open Tasman
Sea. The long-distance hiking routes of Fiordland include the challenging Kepler and
Routeburn Tracks, the remote, water-level Hollyford, and, most famously, the Milford
Track, the so-called "finest walk in the world", a four day adventure in the
convoluted mountains and valleys between the regions greatest lake and Milford
Sound.
Fiordland has few towns, and only one of any
size, Te Anau, with a permanent population of fewer than 2,000. Te Anau is the closest
primary staging area for most Fiordland activities, including treks on the Milford Track
and day cruises on the Milford Sound. During the New Zealand summer months (late-December
through late-March) the population of Te Anau more than doubles, as visitors pour into the
town before and after experiencing the wonders of the region. Te Anaus
infrastructure of lodgings, shops, restaurants, and tour operators is ready to support
more than 5,000 people each night. However, because the summer demand often far exceeds
the capacity at Te Anau, advance reservations for accommodations, sightseeing, and walking
are nearly always required. Fortunately for Home At First travelers to New Zealand, some
of Te Anaus best lodgings are available for their visits.
THE SETTING: Te Anau can change quickly from quiet and
sleepy village to busy and noisy town. No matter. Home At Firsts Te Anau lodgings
are on the edge of the town in a residential neighborhood across a street from the shore
of Lake Te Anau, the largest lake on the South Island and second largest in New Zealand.
THE LODGINGS: Four quality
non-smoking bedrooms, including one family-sized with room for up to six persons. Each
bedroom has a self-contained full bathroom, TV, heat, refrigerator, and is serviced daily.
A full cooked or continental breakfast is provided daily. A spacious common use lounge is
available to all guests. The lodging comes with private off-street parking and is within
410 minutes flat walking distance of the many shops, pubs, and restaurants of Te
Anau.
NOTE: Home At Firsts Fiordland Lodging consistently receives high
ratings from Home At First guests.
