THE ACCOMMODATION: The Smithy Cottage is a traditional Yorkshire stone
farm cottage straight out of All Creatures Great & Small, complete with
four-legged neighbors. The cottage is part of a farm complex forming a central courtyard
and is connected to the main house.
The two-bedroom cottage has been
purpose-renovated for vacationers. It is nicely furnished with room for up to four
persons, with a living room/dining area, fully equipped kitchen and one bathroom
(tub/shower). Its stone walls and open beamed ceilings give the cottage a cozy and
comfortable feel just perfect for a holiday in Yorkshire.
THE HOSTS: The farm owners, the Slater family, are friendly, helpful,
and eager to see to the comfort of their guests. They willingly provide suggestions for
activities, what to see and do in the region, and restaurants.

THE
SETTING: The Smithy Cottage is on a farm just outside the charming
village of Bishop Monkton, in North Yorkshire. The village has a lively pub which offers
good food, as well as a small village shop and a petrol station. Bishop Monkton village is
a five-minute drive from the attractive small spa city of Harrogate (population 65,000)
and is therefore very close to excellent shopping, dining, and other services. |

THE
LOCATION: From Bishop Monkton its easy
to explore the Yorkshire Dalesrich in quaint villages, beautiful
landscapes, castles, abbeys, walking paths, friendly residents, and
excellent local products. Equally convenient is the medieval city of
York, with one of Europes great,
walled, medieval, inner cities, including what is
often called Europes greatest gothic cathedral. Longer driving excursions permit
visits to the English Lake District, the Midlands, and the far north of England. And,
using the hourly high speed rail service from York (or

ACTIVITIES:
Horseback riding and walking are possible locally in Bishop Monkton. The village is an
ideal touring center, located as it is between the historic city of York (45 minutes
southeast) and the Yorkshire Dales, which extend west across northern England from Bishop
Monkton.
