THE ACCOMMODATIONS: River Ness Cottages contain several comfortable apartments in a superb riverfront location in Inverness. Each apartment is charming and individual, well decorated, furnished and heated. Some flats can accommodate up to 7 persons on two floors. Others are as small as one-bedroom, 2-person capacity. Furnishings in all of the apartments are an eclectic mix of overstuffed chairs and sofas, comfortable beds (some doubles, many singles or twins), bathrooms with showers (most with tubs, too), and well-equipped kitchens. Color TV's and coin-operated telephones (which accept incoming calls) are in each flat. Cottages are heated with storage electric heat with individual controls in each room. Some apartments have supplemental gas fireplaces. All cottages share a common laundry access. Separate entrance locks on the cottage main doors and the individual apartment doors ensure privacy and security. The delightful cottage hostess/owner enthusiastically sees to the comfort of her guests, and is a wealth of information about Inverness and the region.

THE SETTING: The cottages are in a historic row of 17th and 18th century townhouses lining the River Ness in the epicenter of Inverness. There is private on-street parking in front of the cottages and additional private lot parking behind the cottages. The street in front of the cottages is access-restricted to cottage residents, keeping traffic minimal. The cottages have views of the River Ness. They are within easy walking distance of numerous shops, restaurants, and other services, as well as the Inverness Tourist Office, Inverness Castle, and the city’s most important museums.

Photo © Home at First.THE LOCATION: The cottage’s central Inverness location makes touring the far north of Scotland via a series of day trips easy by both car and rail travel (Inverness rail station is 3 blocks walking distance). Within reach are such popular destinations as the Nairn coast to the east, the Cairngorm mountains and Loch Ness to the south, the Isle of Skye to the west, and the remote Northern Highlands leading to John o’ Groats on the northern tip of Britain.

ACTIVITIES IN THE REGION: Besides touring, activities possible include golf, walking and hiking, fishing, cruising, bicycling, and exploring castles and cathedrals. There are distilleries to visit, mountains to climb, monsters to seek, Bonnie Prince Charlie’s route to trace, prehistoric sites to investigate, and the nearby great battlefield of Culloden to ponder. Inverness is an excellent central base from which to explore the best of northern Scotland.
