HOME AT FIRST'S CENTRAL OSLO HOTEL
OSLO, NORWAY

Comfort and friendliness in a superb location. Photo © Home at First.THE ACCOMMODATIONS:
Home at First’s cooperating lodging in central Oslo is a small hotel in a quiet, residential section of Norway’s capital city. Sitting on a hillside about 5 minutes walk from the Norwegian Royal Palace, the hotel is a well known locally for its friendly, neighborhood atmosphere. The lounge and little hotel pub are a social center for guests as well as the occasional local resident.

Complimentary self-made waffles--each evening at our central Oslo hotel! Photo © Home at First.        The hotel serves a full breakfast in its breakfast room. In the early evening the hotel’s complimentary Norwegian waffle buffet takes place in the breakfast room, too. Guests make their own waffles and choose from an assortment of toppings, coffee and tea. The waffle buffet tradition has its routes in rural Norway. It is light-spirited self-serve fun—it has none of the formality of high tea—and an excuse for social interaction with other guests.

WAFFLES EVERY EVENING!

THE HOTEL STAFF
take an active interest in their guests, and are enthusiastic and very knowledgeable about what to see and do in Oslo. Hotel guests can purchase tickets at the hotel for all kinds of shows and attractions happening in Oslo.

THE SETTING:
The Norwegian Royal Palace is a short walk from the hotel. Photo © Home at First.       The hotel is about a mile from the primary center of Oslo. Its setting guarantees a quiet, local atmosphere away from the urban bustle of downtown. The quiet, dignified streets of this quarter of Oslo are lined with elegant residences, some foreign embassies, churches, and occasional shops. There is a tram (streetcar) stop about 100 feet from the hotel. It passes through central Oslo on its 15-minute journey to Oslo Central Rail Station and the city’s tourist office. For guests who arrive by car, the hotel has a private parking area.

           NORWAY'S ROYAL PALACE

LOCATION:
Changing of the Guard, Oslo, Norway. Photo © Home at First.      It is a 5-minute walk from the hotel to the grounds of the Royal Palace, home to the Norwegian Royal Family. The park-like grounds and the elegant palace are usually full of strollers of all ages. Despite its traditional uniformed spectacle, the elaborate changing-of-the-guard ceremony at the palace usually draws only small crowds.
The palace overlooks the center of Oslo, which can be crossed on foot in another 15-20 minutes. Oslo’s lively harbor with the Akershus castle/fortress is but 5 minutes walk from downtown. The famous Oslo Viking Ship Museum and Kon Tiki Museum are reached by cross-harbor ferry or bus. Another bus—or a pleasant half-hour walk—takes visitors to the fabulous Gustav Vigeland sculpture park west of the hotel.

ACTIVITIES:
Oslo City Hall from the Akershus fortress walls. Photo © Home at First.      Besides the rich history and beauty of Oslo, the Norwegian capital is also the country’s shopping and culture center. At all times of the year the city center is alive with shoppers scouring shops of all types for goods from all over Norway and around the world. Oslo’s cultural attractions are just as varied—ranging from major rock concerts to opera, and, most importantly, the annual awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize.
Oslo lies at about the same latitude as other Scandinavian destinations you might visit (Bergen and Stockholm). Its weather is cool, averaging 68°F at best. The warmth from the Gulf Stream and surrounding waters of the Scandinavian peninsula do not reach Oslo as much as many of Scandinavia’s other cities. However this means Oslo is also the sunniest of Norway’s cities, with rain also reaching the city less frequently. Take a sweater and leave your umbrella in the room
.

NOTE:
Gustav Vigeland's fascinating sculpture park is a pleasant half-hour walk from the hotel. Photo © Home at First.       Our cooperating Central Oslo hotel is one of many small, quality lodgings through Sweden, Norway, and Denmark that participate in Home at First’s Scandinavian travel program. With Home at First’s help, guests choose from among many locations to design a very personal Scandinavian travel experience.
