O'CONNOR'S COTTAGE
GARRYKENNEDY, CO. TIPPERARY
CENTRAL IRELAND

One of Home At First’s top Ireland accommodations has the great advantages of a central touring location and a setting just a couple hundred yards from 2 popular traditional Irish music pubs. Oh, by the way, it’s one of the newest, best-appointed vacation homes we have anywhere!

THE ACCOMMODATION: O’Connor’s Cottage is a comfortable accommodation for up to 6 persons. Newly built in 2001, O’Connor’s Cottage has style, taste, and all the modern conveniences. The two-story house is set on a good-sized lot about one-half mile from the quaint hamlet of Garrykennedy and the Lough Derg lakeside. While there are other new homes neighboring O’Connor’s, the immediate area has a quiet, rural character.

Lots of blond wood, plenty of windows, and a cheery fireplace combine to make the open kitchen, living and dining areas bright and welcoming. Photo © Home At First.

Inside, the cottage makes great use of bright woods and earth-toned tiles to create a warm atmosphere. The open-plan kitchen, dining room, and living room provide convenience and space. A roaring fire in the living room fireplace cheers up the whole area. Also on the ground floor are one of the cottage’s three double bedrooms, a bathroom with shower, and a laundry room with washer/dryer.
Upstairs, the cottage has two additional double bedrooms, plus a second bathroom (tub/shower). The cottage comes with TV, telephone, fireplace,
comfortable upholstered furnishing, and a fully equipped, practical kitchen. The cottage has central heating with registers in each room. Private, off-street parking is immediately beside the cottage.
THE LOCATION: Garrykennedy is little more than two pubs (both offer live traditional Irish music evenings throughout the summer months) and a marina on an inlet of Ireland’s largest lake, Lough Derg. Lough Derg is part of the Shannon waterway, which extends from the Atlantic Ocean east and north all the way to Northern Ireland.

Garrykennedy is in County Tipperary, the center of the Republic of Ireland. The region is rural, scenic and historic. The land is hilly and wooded. There are many farms, most concerned with dairy cows or sheep production. The landscape is dotted with small towns and villages, each appearing more attractive than the last, for Tipperary is a prosperous part of Ireland.

ACTIVITIES POSSIBLE: Visitors see castles in all states of repair, from ruined towers to privately owned palaces. They play golf, too, locally in parkland courses, and on the easy to reach coasts at the famed championship links courses. There’s hiking & biking on trails that crisscross the varied landscape. And there’s good fishing in and around Lough Derg and the Shannon. There’s good food here, hearty local Irish food—steaks and salmon and lamb and potatoes and garden greens—as well fine foods from the Continent and the ocean.

There is a wide variety of shops and restaurants. The market towns of Nenagh and Killaloe are 15-minute drives from Garrykennedy, and both offer good shopping and eating choices. The small, historic city of Limerick is 30 minutes beyond Killaloe. Ireland’s capital city and cultural center, Dublin, is 90 minutes northeast of Nenagh.

This derelict cottage at Garrykennedy (Central Ireland) is a relic of times past, and an oddly romantic survivor of the Great Famine. You can discover Ireland--old and new, romantic and realistic--touring Ireland via Home at First. Photo © Home at First.

TOURING: Tipperary’s central location makes it a great base from which most of Ireland south of Northern Ireland, including coastal lands east, west, and south may be explored in a series of long and short day trips. But Tipperary is itself worthy of exploration. The region’s beauty, its friendly, welcoming residents, its castles, golf courses, music, food, easy hiking, salmon fishing, and many other attractions combine to provide Tipperary with the best of Ireland.
