THE SETTING:
Killaloe is a growing town of more than 1,000 population that traces its
origins to the 7th century St. Lua whose monastery occupied an
island in the Shannon River by the present day town. When Killaloe’s
most famous son Brian Ború became High King in 1002, little
Killaloe became the capital of Ireland.
Noreen’s Town House is perched near the top of Main Street among the
colorful residences, shops, pubs, and restaurants that dominate this
attractive part of the historic Heritage Town of Killaloe. |
|
Parking for the house is less than 100 yards away on the
town square by St. Flannan’s Church. (The church grounds contain the
1,000-year-old St. Lua’s Oratory.) Also on the town square is Heany’s
Market, ideal for all your normal grocery needs. Two minutes walk from
the house is Killaloe’s new Convent Hill Shopping Centre, with its Super
Value supermarket. Across the street from Noreen’s Town House is a
lively restaurant/pub owned by the internationally famed Irish comedian
Brendan Grace. Other houses, shops, restaurants and pubs line
Main Street as it descends steeply to the still-used |

BALLINA,

CONNECTED WITH KILLALOE BY
A HISTORIC ARCHED BRIDGE
ACROSS THE RIVER SHANNON. |
13th century St. Flannan’s Cathedral on the
Shannon River at the base of town.
Twinned forever with Killaloe
is the similarly sized town of Ballina (Co. Tipperary) that is
connected to Killaloe by a historic, narrow, multiple arched stone
bridge across the Shannon. This crossing is the first bridge south of
Lough Derg, the scenic 20-mile-long lake through which the Shannon runs
on its way from the north of Ireland south and west to the Atlantic
Ocean. Like Killaloe, Ballina offers numerous restaurants and pubs. |

THE LOCATION:
Killaloe is a gateway town for three Central Ireland counties: Clare,
Tipperary, and Limerick. All three counties offer a variety of scenery
and excellent touring potential. Eastern County Clare is
mountainous. Its
western edge
is famed for
its convoluted Atlantic coastline of dunes and sea cliffs including the
Cliffs of Moher. In between is the mysterious rocky zone called the
Burren. Clare’s southern border lines the Shannon Estuary and includes
Shannon International Airport, just 20 miles from Killaloe.
County Limerick is largely agricultural, but centers around
Ireland’s fourth largest |

city,
Limerick, with its medieval King John’s Castle and
associations with Angela’s Ashes. Co. Limerick also is home to
Adare village with its 3 ancient churches, castle, resort
golf course, and row of lovely, pastel thatched cottages.
County Tipperary invites exploration of it prosperous, green dairy
land, scenic mountains, and the interesting eastern shore of
Lough Derg. Tipperary is very much of the center of the Republic of
Ireland, and has many
historic sites worth visiting, none better known
than the medieval fortress cathedral, the
Rock of Cashel.
Together
the three counties make up the heart of Central Ireland’s Shannon
Region. Here are classic Irish villages and towns, like Lahinch, Ennis,
Nenagh, Garrykennedy, Dromineer, Puckane, and Terryglass. Here, too is
great walking and great cycling, along the
Lough Derg Way and the Lough Derg Cycle Route.

THE HOSTS: The
friendly owners/hosts, Noreen and Alan, meet you upon arrival and
explain the workings of the cottage and the Killaloe town. They reside
nearby to Killaloe and are normally available for questions or if
problems arise during your visit. Noreen works part time at the Killaloe
Heritage Centre tourist information office on the Killaloe/Ballina
bridge and is a wealth of information about the history and pre-history
of Ireland, as well as modern visitor interests in touring and other
activities.

ACTIVITIES:
Because of their location on the Shannon at the southern end of Lough
Derg, Killaloe/Ballina offer sailing, cruising, and fishing
opportunities. The riverside/canal area also offers a setting ideal for
strolling, picnics, and, when the Irish summer permits, swimming.
Killaloe is an
ideal location for touring
throughout the heart of Central Ireland and, further afield, throughout
most of the Republic of Ireland.
Outdoors enthusiasts —
walkers, cyclists, anglers, and hikers
— will find much to keep them busy in Central
Ireland. Golfers, too, will enjoy the |
