1807 the British Navy (absent Lord Nelson, who had been killed destroying Napoleon’s fleet at Trafalgar in 1805) returned to Copenhagen to break Napoleon’s continental blockade of trade with Britain. The resulting bombardment of the old, wooden city with the navy’s new fire rockets destroyed many buildings, including homes, churches, and warehouses in the harbor district. Somehow the new warehouses at the intersection of Copenhagen’s harbor and its Nyhavn canal dock port escaped the shells and fires that destroyed much of the district.
