IN-HOUSE RESTAURANT

HOME AT FIRST offers some excellent lodgings with unusual histories: converted farm outbuildings; old castle towers; gatehouses, farmhouses, and rural cottages. Throughout Scandinavia we offer several inns and hotels that may not always have served as guest lodgings, a fact that only makes them more interesting to us, and to our guests. Include among these HOME AT FIRST’s hotel at on the old Nyhavn harbor in central Copenhagen.

THE HISTORY: The modern 4-star hotel still looks like the two historic warehouses that originally filled the colorful red brick, gabled structure. The two spice warehouses were built in 1803, two years after Britain’s Admiral

Horatio Nelson’s daring attack at the Battle of

Copenhagen during the Napoleonic Wars. In

1807 the British Navy (absent Lord Nelson, who had been killed destroying Napoleon’s fleet at Trafalgar in 1805) returned to Copenhagen to break Napoleon’s continental blockade of trade with Britain. The resulting bombardment of the old, wooden city with the navy’s new fire rockets destroyed many buildings, including homes, churches, and warehouses in the harbor district. Somehow the new warehouses at the intersection of Copenhagen’s harbor and its Nyhavn canal dock port escaped the shells and fires that destroyed much of the district. The buildings served the city for almost 170 years as warehouses, then as a hospital, then as a prison. With the revitalization of Copenhagen

devastation — the old buildings were converted into a hotel in 1971.

THE ACCOMMODATIONS:
Following a major renovation in 2001, the fully modernized hotel continues to incorporate exposed pine beams throughout — a reminder of the structure’s warehouse origins. The hotel has 150 rooms and suites, all with shower or bathtub, toilet, trouser press, hair dryer, minibar, telephone, radio, satellite TV and wireless internet access. Many of the rooms feature views of the harbor or the Nyhavn Canal. The hotel’s self-contained restaurant offers the closest fine dining, but the large choice of other fine restaurants and cafés includes many within 200 yards

along the trendy Nyhavn harbor canal.

THE LOCATION: When Nyhavn claimed its place as the brightly colored, historic harbor centerpiece of central Copen-hagen, the hotel was properly positioned for Copenhagen’s latest great invasion, this time by visitors from all over the world. The New Harbor Hotel is just a few steps from the lively shops, cafés and restaurants that line the Nyhavn Canal. Walking a few minutes from Nyhavn brings visitors to the Royal Theatre, Denmark’s Royal Palace, the nation’s Parliament, and Copenhagen’s great Strøget mile-long pedestrian shopping street complex. Indeed, most of Copenhagen can be explored easily using Nyhavn as a central base. The city’s two most famous attractions, Tivoli amusement park and

public transportation (including buses, taxis, pedi-cabs, and water taxis) or by bicycle — taking advantage of Copen-hagen’s free bike program. Importantly in crowded central Copenhagen, having the use of a car unnecessary. Still, the hotel offers (limited) free off-street parking.

THE UPSHOT: Here’s the magic formula: Location + Setting + Service + Ambiance = Desirability. For visitors looking to explore Copenhagen efficiently, enjoyably, and comfortably, HOME AT FIRST's New Harbor Hotel is the ideal lodging. HOME AT FIRST’s lodgings throughout Scandinavia are selected to provide our guests easy access to the best of DENMARK, SWEDEN, and NORWAY.

NOTE: Our cooperating Central Copenhagen hotel is one of many small, quality lodgings through Sweden, Norway, and Denmark that participate in Home at First’s Scandinavian travel program. With Home at First’s help, guests choose from among many locations to design a very personal Scandinavian travel experience.
