HOME AT FIRST'S NEW HARBOR
HOTEL
COPENHAGEN, DENMARK
---------------------------
Traditional comfort with a
superb location in
central Copenhagen surrounded by beauty & history.
Home at First
offers some excellent lodgings with unusual histories: converted farm outbuildings in
England, Wales, and Scotland, old castle towers in Scotland, Wales, and Ireland,
gatehouses, farmhouses, and crofters cottages throughout the British Isles. Our
superbly located London Apartments at St. Katharines Marina, while themselves in
modern apartment buildings, are set by an upscale marina that had been a warehouse wharf
complex for 150 years.
Home at Firsts British Isles lodgings are
not the only ones we offer that may have unusual histories. Throughout Scandinavia we
offer several inns and hotels that may not always have served as guest lodgings, a fact
that only makes them more interesting to us, and to our guests. Include among these Home
at Firsts hotel at on the old Nyhavn harbor in central Copenhagen.
THE HISTORY: The modern
4-star hotel still looks like the two historic warehouses that originally filled the
colorful red brick, gabled structure. The two spice warehouses were built in 1803, two
years after Britains Admiral Horatio Nelsons daring attack at the Battle of
Copenhagen during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1807 the British Navy (absent Lord Nelson, who
had been killed destroying Napoleons fleet at Trafalgar in 1805) returned to
Copenhagen to break Napoleons continental blockade of trade with Britain. The
resulting bombardment of the old, wooden city with the navys new fire rockets
destroyed many buildings, including homes, churches, and warehouses in the harbor
district. Somehow the new warehouses at the intersection of Copenhagens harbor and
its Nyhavn canal dock port escaped the shells and fires that destroyed much of the
district. The buildings served the city for almost 170 years as warehouses, then as a
hospital, then as a prison. With the revitalization of Copenhagen following World War
IIwhen the city was occupied by the Nazis but suffered no large-scale
devastationthe old buildings were converted into a hotel in 1971.

THE LOCATION:
When Nyhavn claimed its place as the brightly colored, historic harbor centerpiece of
central Copenhagen, the hotel was properly positioned for Copenhagens latest great
invasion, this time by visitors from all over the world. The New Harbor Hotel is just a
few steps from the lively shops, cafιs and restaurants that line the Nyhavn Canal.
Walking a few minutes from Nyhavn brings visitors to the Royal Theatre, Denmarks
Royal Palace, the nations Parliament, and Copenhagens great Strψget mile-long
pedestrian shopping street complex. Indeed, most of Copenhagen can be explored easily
using Nyhavn as a central base. The citys two most famous attractions, Tivoli
amusement park and the Little Mermaid statue, are within walking distance, or are easily
reached by public transportation (including buses, taxis, pedi-cabs, and water taxis) or
by bicycletaking advantage of Copenhagens free bike program. Importantly in
crowded central Copenhagen, having the use of a car unnecessary. Still, the hotel offers
(limited) free off-street parking.
COPENHAGEN'S

warehouse origins. The hotel has 150 rooms and suites, all with shower or bathtub, toilet,

Not traveling with your laptop? The hotel offers its guests use of a computer and printer
