NELSON INN —

NELSON, SOUTH ISLAND
NEW ZEALAND

THE ACCOMMODATION:
Home at First guests love Nelson Inn. This Victorian age (built circa 1880) former deanery of the adjacent Nelson Cathedral, provides excellent accommodation in a fine setting and excellent location ideal as a base for travel throughout this most interesting part of New Zealand. A recent complete renovation has restored the home’s grandeur and added to its comfort.

Tasteful elegance with comfort and space highlights each bedroom suite at Nelson Inn. Photo © Home at First.        There are seven unique bedrooms upstairs in the two-story house, each with its own personality, and each opulently furnished. The beds are right for royalty, and the en suite bathrooms as practical and immaculate as they are beautiful. Rooms have black-out drapes, electric blankets, hairdryers and curling irons, bathrobes, television, direct dial telephone, data point, workspace, fresh flowers and are maid-serviced daily. Fresh cut flowers grace each room. There is a luggage elevator.

The comfortable living room at Nelson Inn is an inviting place for conversation or a quiet read. Photo © Home at First.        There is a common kitchenette alcove on the second floor for guests’ use. The ground floor provides common living areas: comfortable living room, sedate, yet sociable bar with open fireplace, and cheery breakfast room. Choose from a delicious continental or cooked breakfast. Specialties may include omelets, pancakes, waffles or fritters, smoked fish, venison sausages, bacon, and eggs. During the warmer months a covered terrace and courtyard draws guests from the bar outside. Nelson Inn is smoke-free inside.

New Zealand's sunniest climate encourages outdoor dining in Nelson. Photo © Home at First.THE SETTING: The house sits up on a hillock almost like a pedestal next to Nelson Cathedral. Set on high ground in the center of the city, the inn looks out over the treetops to the hills that surround Nelson on three sides. The ocean is just out of sight, except in winter when some of the trees lose their leaves. Within shorts walks are the center of Nelson city with many restaurants, cafés and shops. A short drive leads to Nelson’s waterfront, with its trendy restaurants, to three golf courses, art galleries, theaters, and lovely, peaceful parks and gardens. The Nelson Airport is about 15 minutes away.

Wine tasting at one of dozens of local wineries on the Nelson Wine Trail. Photo Bob Ecker.THE LOCATION: Nelson, on the north coast of New Zealand’s South Island, is best known for three things: the best weather in New Zealand, three very different National Parks, and the quality wines that come from its numerous vineyards. Equidistant from Nelson are the fascinating regions of the Marlborough Sounds and Abel Tasman National Park.

Outdoor adventure in the mountains of Nelson Lakes National Park south of Nelson. Hiking and kayaking in the uncommon beauty and pristine coastal waters of Abel Tasman National Park to the west of Nelson. Exploration by mail boat or on foot of the lush, convoluted fiords of the Marlborough Sounds to the east. The Nelson region also offers these activities: beaches, water sports, arts & crafts, horseback riding, sea kayaking, and golf.

"Our Nelson Inn hostesses were so helpful in setting up activities and generally insuring our enjoyment of the region. Breakfasts were delicious. Even though we were leaving very early one morning to go kayaking, we were served a breakfast of fresh baked croissants, fruit, etc."
