GOLF CLUBS IN
WALES
Best-kept secret of British golf destinations.

Nefyn & District Golf Club
Morfa Nefyn, Llyn Peninsula, Gwynedd, Northwest Wales

Nefyn Old Course, 13th Green, on the Porthdinllaen Peninsula      Seaside cliff-top course is a hidden treasureone of Britain's great unknown golfing gems.

Are you looking for a hidden jewel of a golf course, a great track you can discover before the word gets out, tee times become hard to get, greens fees become astronomical, and crowds mean waiting at every tee? Look no further—look at Nefyn.                                                  Photo Gary Talbot, courtesy Nefyn & District Golf Club.
Nefyn’s a one-off. It has 26 holes but plays like it has 36—with two distinct 18-hole courses. Because the course is set on a cliff top and strung along two peninsulas in the Irish Sea, all of Nefyn’s holes are within sight of the sea—a unique setting for a British course and rarely found anywhere. Although high over the sea, the course plays like a links, with few trees, but with hazardous rough, bunkers, and exposure to weather. The course is well maintained and can be a very tough test for low-handicap golfers, yet its beauty in fine weather makes it a joyful experience for even casual golfers. One more little thing—there’s a welcoming pub on the beach at Nefyn at about the mid-point of the course.

HISTORY OF NEFYN & DISTRICT GOLF CLUB
Nefyn and District Golf Club was formed in 1907. The course added 9 holes 1912 and a third 9 holes in 1933. Presently only 26 holes are played with a set "front 10" and two distinctly different "back 8" hole groupings.

TWO COURSES AND SEVERAL NOTABLE HOLES
The Porthdinllaen Peninsula from the air, showing holes 12-17 of the Old Course at Nefyn & District Golf Club. Porthdinllaen village with Ty Coch pub are located along the cove in the right-center of the picture. Photo is oriented top=east.         Set high on the sea cliffs of a slim peninsula extending north into Caernarfon Bay, the courses at Nefyn & District Golf Club are exposed to the full force of weather sweeping eastward across the Irish Sea. Remarkably, although Nefyn is high and rarely dry, its courses are almost never closed. This is more remarkable when one realizes that all of the courses’ 26 holes are in sight of the sea, and therefore without much shelter from ocean storms.
But the weather and the ocean views are only two of the distractions at Nefyn. Consider the distractions available on the par-five 12th hole at Nefyn: a blind drive; a blind second shot; a public thoroughfare crossing the course for the beach; a crater-sized pot bunker; a cliff with a serious drop to the sea; and, ultimately, the Ty Coch (Red House) pub right on the beach. Beyond its dramatic views and challenges of weather and cliff-side terrain, Nefyn is known for its strategically placed bunkers and excellent greens.
Ten of Nefyn’s 26 holes run alongside the sea, making its two courses among the most beautiful in Britain. But Nefyn can be as difficult as it is beautiful. The Old Course record is 67, shot by the great-yet-diminutive Welsh pro Ian Woosnam, who speaks reverently of Nefyn.

The 4th Green at Nefyn & District G.C. with the Rivals Mtns. in the left background.         The first—and common—10 holes of the two Nefyn courses have the 2nd, 3rd and 4th holes aligned next to cliffs. The 5th hole features a spectacular tee extending out over the sea. From the 6th onwards the course provides outstanding views of the surrounding sea and mountain scenery.
Crystal clear days make it possible to see the tops of the Wicklow Mountains west across the sea in Ireland.
