  Millbrook Resort
Arrowtown near Queenstown
    South Island, New Zealand

                    —————————
Deluxe Golf in a Remarkable Setting

                         —PAGE 1—

If you’re looking for spectacular scenery, challenging golf, and friendly environs that offer great food, hospitality, touring and accommodations at a reasonable price in one of the First World’s most exotic locations, read on!
Evidence of an American Empire exists worldwide—at the very least in the proliferation of American-style golf resorts. Jack Nicklaus has designed courses in Scotland and England. In recent years several new Irish resort courses have been built in the American style to lure American club golfers, to the consternation of Irish traditionalists. Outside of the First World the phenomenon is also widespread, with Mexico, Arabia, and Thailand all becoming golf destinations American style. So it should be no surprise that an American-style golf resort has been built in that furthest corner of the First World, New Zealand’s South Island. Millbrook Resort opened in the 1990’s in a fabulous natural setting near the end of the earth.
Millbrook is a full resort community built around a gorgeous golf course. New Zealand’s international golf legend, Bob Charles, was brought in to design the course, and he’s happy with the result. So are most golfers who play Millbrook. Include former President Bill Clinton among the amateurs who have played a round at Millbrook and enjoyed the experience thoroughly.
The Village at Millbrook: quality accommodations for the whole family. Home at First photo.         Millbrook is more than golf, and that is important. The golf is inexpensive there—by American standards certainly. The folks at Millbrook hope you come to play golf, but they hope you bring the family, too. The housing possibilities are varied and attractive. (Home at First can arrange housing at Millbrook for its New Zealand guests.) There are lots of activities other than golf at Millbrook: a fitness center, a spa, three themed restaurants, swimming and saunas, tennis, biking, hiking and running trails.
If you run out of things to do at Millbrook, Queenstown—New Zealand’s outdoor activity and adventure sports center—is about a dozen miles away. Think jet boats, bungy jumping, winter skiing, serious hiking, more serious mountain climbing, horseback riding, trout fishing, and more adventure rides than an amusement park. The scenery in this region of New Zealand is perfect for such activity: not too high, but arid, with big lakes, wild rivers, and rimmed with rugged mountains. The oceans—three of them, but, most prominently two, the Southern Ocean and the Tasman Sea—are short flights or long hikes from Queenstown. And, if golf is your thing, Millbrook isn’t the only quality game around. Queenstown’s Kelvin Heights course is, if anything, even more scenic than Millbrook, while perhaps being somewhat less of a challenge.

Launch Pad: the 9th Tee at Millbrook. Home at First photo.HISTORY: Founded in 1992 as the centerpiece of the Millbrook Resort, the course was designed by Bob Charles*, New Zealand’s greatest golfer. Charles has written about Millbrook: "When I first visited the site…I realized I had been given something special to work with. Nestled in the Wakatipu Basin, surrounded by the spectacular Remarkables, the terrain lent itself so naturally to the game of golf that it was only one one hole that any earth moving was required. Thus, like most great golf courses in the world, it has been largely laid on the natural landscape."

THE COURSE & SOME NOTABLE HOLES: Millbrook Resort sits in a shallow amphitheater of prime ranchland on a plateau above Lake Hayes. Always in view are the surrounding mountains of the Southern Alps and the Remarkables.
