The cottage sleeps 2-4 persons in two small

The

about the cottage and the locale.
SINCE
THE MIDDLE AGES TETBURY'S
CHIPPING STEPS HAVE LED FROM TETBURY'S
LOWER TOWN TO ITS MARKET SQUARE.
THE SETTING:
Malthouse Cottage is one of
several cottages of medieval origin that line Tetburys famed Chipping Steps, which
served as the site for the hiring of domestic and farm labor on market days centuries ago.
Now the cobbled Chipping Steps are simply the oldest part of the town, connecting the old
hilltop market square with a car park for visitors. Tetbury, a classic Cotswold success
story, prospered from the regions wool trade which exploded after the Norman
conquest brought enormous Continental demand for British wool. The center of the trade in
Tetbury was atop the hill at the town square, hard by the Chipping Steps. Malthouse
Cottage, parts of which date from the 11th century Norman Conquest, is a living remnant of
that historic prosperity, and a comfortable, convenient one, to boot.
THE
PARISH CHURCH OF ST. MARY
THE VIRGIN (1777), TETBURY.
LOCATION:
Tetbury is in the
geographic center of the southern Cotswolds. It still hosts an open market on Fridays at
the 350-year-old pillared Market House. Other notable town landmarks include the Georgian
gothic St. Marys Church, dating from the time of the American Revolution, with
Englands fourth highest spire, and the fox-hunt themed Snooty Fox Hotel, adjacent to
the Chipping Steps. With lots of 17th-18th century character, shopping facilities,
interesting restaurants and pubs Tetbury is a haven for antique lovers or those looking
for an authentic Cotswolds experience.
Tetburys location is ideally situated for touring the
Cotswoldsfrom Bath to Oxford to Stratford-on-Avon. Day-trips outside the region are
also quite manageable, to destinations as varied and attractive as Salisbury
and Stonehenge, Tintern Abbey and the Welsh borders and even London. The nearest large
towns of Cirencester (with its fine Roman museum), Gloucester (with its great cathedral
and historic inland harbor), and Cheltenham (former great spa of the Regency period, and
center of the Cotswolds antiques universe), are easily explored from Tetbury. But the big
attractions in the Cotswolds are its smallest, oldest, least changed, best-preserved
villages and towns, like Chipping Camden, Broadway, Winchcombe, and Bourton-on-the-Water.
These and dozens of better and lesser-known Cotswolds jewels (see: Stanton)
make wonderful places to visit on any easy day-trip meander from Tetbury.
ACTIVITIES: Tetbury offers a wide variety of activities, especially touring and walking. Nearby is the acclaimed Westonbirt Arboretum
with 17 miles of trails exploring some 600 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds.
Another important, but not public, neighboring estate is Highgrove House, country home of
Prince Charles. There is no shortage of walking pathsboth short and long
distancein the area. Cycling in the region includes on
and off-road routes, and short and long-distance trips on dedicated mapped and marked bike
paths.
THE
TETBURY MARKET OPERATES EVERY WEDNESDAY UNDER
COVER OF THE HISTORIC, COLONNADED MARKET HOUSE.
There are local open-air markets in most neighboring towns, and Tetburys weekly
Wednesday market is 2-minutes walk from the cottage. Important architecture, like Tetburys
Parish Church of St. Mary the Virgin and the Market House, invites exploratory walking
through nearby towns and villages. Delightful, often unusual, pubs and restaurants provide
sustenance after hours of walking or touring. Tetbury offers excellent dining, and several
restaurants, cafιs, tea rooms, and pubs are within a short walk of Malthouse Cottage.
