LEIF ERICSON: VIKING DISCOVERER OF AMERICA
	- Leif Ericson (970?-1020?), was born in Iceland, then a Viking island outpost belonging to what would eventually become Norway. Son of outcast Norseman Eric the Red, Ericson, hearing of a forested, warmer, distant land to the west, sailed and rowed his Viking ship from a failing base colony in Greenland to landfall on what is now Labrador or Newfoundland. Recent carbon-dated evidence found in maritime Canada

support Leif EricsonТs claim to being the first European to set foot on the North American continent. And his journey occurred 1,000 years ago Ч as many years before Columbus's journeys to the Caribbean (he never touched the North American mainland) as have passed since.
