Leif Ericson (970?-1020?),
was born in Iceland, then a Viking island outpost belonging to what would eventually
become Norway. Son of outcast Norseman Eric the Red, Ericson, hearing of a forested,
warmer, distant land to the west, sailed and rowed his Viking ship from a failing base
colony in Greenland to landfall on what is now Labrador or Newfoundland.
