Kerry View Cottage has
all the little details
that make a vacation house perfect. Take
the living room for example: comfy, over-
stuffed chairs, squeaky clean blonde wood
floors, flat screen TV, cozy fireplace, with
two pair of French doors opening to the
furnished patio and private garden. |
floor is a completely equipped kitchen
with dining nook, elegant entrance hall with wood burning stove, and the
formal dining room with multiple tables and French doors leading to a
furnished patio. We nominate the expansive, ground floor living room as
the cottage’s most appealing space. It is beautifully furnished with
plush, upholstered chairs, sofa and love seat, enclosed fireplace, and
large color TV, and, via sliding doors, opens onto the patio and gardens
with sweeping views.
Bedroom floors are carpeted wall-to-wall, while common rooms
feature beautiful blonde wood floors or rustic, Italianate tile floors
in warm, earth tones. A first-floor utility room with a full-sized
American washing machine and matching clothes dryer is accessed through
the kitchen. |

Four of the five bedrooms, the living room, and |
|
the
entrance hall feature views north across |

|
Kenmare Bay to Ireland’s highest mountains,
MacGillycuddy's
Reeks, the dominant landmarks of the Ring of Kerry.
Stylistically, the cottage achieves the conservative, overstuffed,
modern fashion of a large, upscale, suburban family home. Rooms are
warmed via efficient electric storage heaters. Private parking is
immediately in front of the cottage, with room for several vehicles.
THE SETTING: Kerry View Cottage
is set in an idyllic rural setting just two miles from the colorful
regional center of Kenmare in southernmost County Kerry in Ireland’s
southwestern corner. The upland countryside |

Kenmare is not old by Irish standards, having been founded in 1670.
However, the outlying region is dotted with stone circles and other
prehistoric monuments. There is considerable Celtic history in the
region, where the Roughty River empties into Kenmare Bay (also called
the Kenmare River), an arm of the Atlantic Ocean wedged like a sound
between the Beara and Iveragh peninsulas. Viking invaders likely sailed
up the bay to the site of modern
Kenmare. The town’s name comes from Irish Gaelic for "head of the sea." |
|
|
|
|
Modern Kenmare is a colorful, prim town with many more shops,
restaurants (latest count: 30+), and pubs than one would expect could be
supported by its permanent population of about 2,000. Kenmare’s
Wednesday market draws many people to its busy central square, which
also is home to the regional tourist office.
On days when you don't eat out in Kenmare,
the fully-equipped kitchen at Kerry View
Cottage comes in more than handy. |
