With no sand, very little water, relatively short distances, fairly open tee shots, few
blind approaches, lush, irrigated fairways, reasonable greens, low prices, and fantastic
scenery, Queenstown Golf Club, Kelvin Heights course offers one of New Zealands best
golfing experiences.
It gets better. Even on the finest of days the
course remains uncrowded, despite being open to visitors seven days a week in what must be
the outdoor sports capital of New Zealand.
The Queenstown Golf Club opened its Kelvin
Heights course in April, 1975. In the quarter-century that has followed the course has
matured, with the growth of its many native pines closing in the fairways somewhat, making
it necessary to stay on the fairways in order to score well here.
THE REMARKABLE 5TH
HOLE
Queenstown is blessed with superb weather at all times of year, set as it is in the rain
shadow of New Zealands spectacular Southern Alps. The abundance of sunny days makes
playing Kelvin Heights in ideal conditions a strong likelihood. However, long sunny, dry
spells means the parts of the course that are not irrigated can become cement-like
hardpanyet another reason to stay in the fairways.
In its short history Queenstown
Kelvin Heights has gained a reputation as New Zealands most scenic course, and,
therefore, one of the most scenic courses in the world. Flanked by dramatic, serrated
ridges like Queenstowns aptly named Remarkables and the deep blue of Lake Wakatipu,
the hilly plateau and lakeside course offers ever-changing vistas that beg to be
photographed. Its signature hole, the 332-meter (363-yard) par 4 5th, is the
best known single hole in New Zealand because of its left-handed crescent hugging the
lakeshore. Several other holes rival its beauty: the par-5 4th, the downhill
par-3 10th, and the hillside par-5 11th and par-4 12th
all offer good golfing challenge coupled with distracting scenerykeep a camera
handy.

When President Bill Clinton came to Queenstown he stayed and played at nearby Millbrook
Resort. Millbrooks fine course, more wide open and nearly as scenic as Kelvin
Heights, was, we understand, not the Presidents first choice, but, for security
reasons, was selected over Queenstown Golf Club. Were lucky. We get to play both
courses.
