THE HARDANGER PLATEAU: SCENIC OUTDOOR PLAYGROUND.

 Plateau

Europe's largest mountain plateau region is the wilderness barrier between Oslo and Bergen. Much of the region is incorporated into the Hardangervidda National Park, Norway's largest, home to moose, lynx, and Europe's largest herd of reindeer. There are but a few traditional villages and some outdoor resort complexes in this remote, spectacular scenery. Although the region is served by
the scenic Oslo–Bergen rail line,
it is best explored by automobile.

Lodgings: HOME AT FIRST's lodging here is a family-run hotel on the eastern edge of the Hardangervidda National Park. The hotel provides quality rooms, and and excellent restaurant. Because of the remoteness of the region, evening meals at the hotel are included in the package. Guests arriving by train will be picked up by the hotel van at the nearest station on the Bergen-Oslo line.

FINSE — A REMOTE HAMLET ON THE HARDANGER PLATEAU —
HAS THE HIGHEST STATION ON THE OSLO-BERGEN RAILWAY
AT 4,000 FEET ABOVE SEA LEVEL. FINSE IS A CROSSROADS OF
MAJOR CROSS-COUNTRY SKI ROUTES, WHICH SERVE AS
HIKING ROUTES IN SUMMER. FINSE IS ALSO THE START POINT
FOR THE 32-MILE-LONG DESCENT OF THE RALLARVEGEN CYCLE
ROUTE TO SEA LEVEL AT FLΕM ON THE SOGNEFJORD.

Getting Around the Hardanger Plateau Region: Use of a rental car permits far greater flexibility and independenceespecially for those wanting to stop and enjoy the scenery, and explore small, out-of-the-way places. Guests arriving by train can arrange for guided sightseeing in the hotel van (extra cost).

Getting to/from the Hardanger Plateau Region: Arriving by rental car from Bergen or Oslo is possible via several extremely scenic routes. The mid-point station of Norwegian Rail's equally scenic Oslo–Bergen line is served by 3-4 trains a day in each direction.

These extra-cost activities may be pre-arranged as part of your lodging reservations, or may be arranged once you arrive at the hotel. Guides are English-speaking Norwegians eager to provided insights into life in this beautiful part of Norway.
