Attractions in the Hardanger region: Traditional Norwegian villages; rugged glaciated mountains, spectacular waterfalls, and remote farming communities; scenic railway and steamship journeys; summer skiing and hiking wonderland.

Lodgings: HOME AT FIRST's lodging is a small, traditional Norwegian hotel located along the Hardanger Fjord. The hotel has an excellent restaurant.

In our customers' own words—

"The hotel at the Hardanger Fjord provided
a very personal reception. Dinner there was exquisite."
— B. & P. McKee, Arizona

"The hotel on the Hardanger Fjord was very special. We greatly enjoyed our time there. Our room featured an exquisite view overlooking the fjord!"                                      — L. Wold, California

Activities Possible: Nearby our Hardanger Fjord inn are a fine museum of Hardanger folk culture, and a "living" museum devoted to traditional boat building. Among natural wonders reachable by car are Norway's largest waterfall, the Vψringfossen, and the Folgefonn Glacier with excellent hiking and summer skiing. Further afield, but reachable as a day-trip is the remarkable Sognefjord region with its narrow sea arms, fjord cruises, and the narrow gauge Flεm railway that climbs steeply from the fjord to Myrdal station high in the mountains.

Getting Around the Hardanger Fjord region: Use of a rental car permits flexibility and independence — especially for those wanting to stop and enjoy the scenery, and explore small, out-of-the-way places. It is important to note that time-consuming fjord crossings by ferry boat are often necessary in this region, making travel slow, but providing a chance to enjoy the superb scenery from the boat.

Getting to/from the Hardanger region: Although a few cruise boats regularly ply the Hardanger Fjord, visitors to the region need a rental car to reach the fjord region on their way driving east from Bergen, west from Oslo, or north from Stavanger.

Norway's convoluted fjords and mountains mean that the fastest way to travel is often the slow ferry boat. Photo © Home At First.
