THE MASTER BEDROOM AT
GOLDEN
COTTAGE HAS ITS OWN BATHROOM (SHOWERNO TUB), TWIN BEDS,
DRESSERS AND A WARDROBE. |
THE ACCOMMODATIONS:
Golden Cottage was built in 1860 as a home for
workers of Blockleys silk mills. It is one of a long row of
cottages of golden Cotswold stone.
The cottage has been furnished as a
home rather than as a holiday cottage and
provides many unexpected little extra touches. The front
door opens into the living room furnished with an
upholstered two-seater sofa and two armchairs. There is a
television, video player and radio/cassette/CD player. The
cottage has central heating, and there is a log-burning
stove in the living room for cozy
evenings at home. One end of the
living room

serves as the dining area with an antique pine
dining table that seats four.
The
well-equipped kitchen has built-in cabinets and a
lovely antique pine china cabinet, table and chairs for four,
a range, oven, fridge, microwave, and washer/dryer. On the
second floor are two bedrooms. One has twin beds plus its
own bathroom with stall shower, toilet, and basin. The
second bedroom has a double bed. There is a
master bathroom in the upstairs hall with
Victorian roll-top bathtub, walk-in shower,
toilet, basin and heated towel rail.
Behind the cottage is a delightful patio |

garden, with views of the rolling Cotswold
countryside. Barbecue equipment is provided.
An arched alleyway on one side of the cottage
provides access to the rear entrance of the
cottage and its garden. Parking is on the street in the front
of the cottage.
THE
SETTING:
Centered between
Moreton-in-Marsh and Chipping Campden, the
village of Blockley commands a
delightful location in the hills of the North Cotswolds. In
its heyday Blockley boasted 12 water
mills that were converted into a thriving silk
industry in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Blockleys combined post office and general
store is open six days a week and also on
Sunday mornings selling newspapers, groceries,
fruit, vegetables, and freshly baked bread.
Blockleys historic church and village common are
worth more than a casual look, but the most important
attraction in town is doubtless the Crown Inn, which offers
both a friendly pub where |
|
townsfolk gather, and a stylish restaurant
offering fine dining. The Crown Inn is
approximately 3/8 mile along Blockleys narrow main street
from Golden Cottage: a pretty, essentially flat walk through
the town.
THE
LOCATION:
Blockleys setting among the rolling hills of
the Northern Cotswolds is both attractive and practical.
The village is just minutes by car from other classic
Cotswolds villages and towns, including Chipping Campden,
Moreton-on-Marsh, Bourton-on-the-Hill, Stow-on-the-Wold,
Upper and Lower Swell, Upper and Lower
Slaughter, Snowshill, Broadway,
Stanton, and Stanway. Blockley is
also within 45 minutes drive of three major towns with
international reputations: Oxford
to the southeast, Cheltenham to the southwest,
and Shakespeares Stratford-upon-Avon to the
north. Day trip destinations further afield
include Gloucester, Bath, Bristol,
and the English border country with
South Wales. Remarkably, London itself is
within day trip range by rail from Moreton-on-Marsh.
Moretons rail station is less than 4 miles from Blockley, |

TOURING, ATTRACTIONS, AND ACTIVITIES POSSIBLE:
The Cotswolds
offer luscious, traditional
English scenery worthy of long days of exploration by car,
bicycle, horseback, and on foot. The region has managed to
preserve many of its finest villages and towns despite the
encroaching modern shopping centers and highways.
Winding back roads, bridle paths,
bike routes, and
walking trails provide
excellent access to the unspoiled England that
in |
| places reaches
back through the Industrial Revolution
and the Middle Ages to Saxon times. The Cotswolds region
is properly renowned for its numerous
manor houses, large estates with English
gardens open to the public, and historic
castles like those at Warwick, Berkeley, and
Sudeley.
Blockleys
location is ideally situated for touring the Cotswolds from Oxford to Stratford-upon-Avon
to Bath. Longer day-trips outside the region are also quite manageable, to destinations as
varied and attractive as Salisbury and Stonehenge, Tintern
Abbey and the |
