THE COTTAGE: Home at Firsts
Fitzgeralds Cottage is a conveniently located vacation home that comfortably sleeps
four to five adults, or four adults plus two children. The ground-floor has two bedrooms
(one with a double bed; one with twin beds), a full bathroom with shower, a cozy
dining/kitchen area with seating for six, plus laundry area with washer/dryer. The second
floor has a living room built to take full advantage of the views of the Falls of Dochart
at the front of the house, plus an additional bedroom with king bed, and a second complete
bath with tub and shower. There is private, beautifully maintained back garden area with
outside seating. The owner/hostess lives nearby in Killin town and actively sees to the
comfort of her guests.
THE SETTING: Fitzgeralds
Cottage is located on the western end of Main Street at the entrance to the Central
Scotland town of Killin, population 700. A popular tourist destination, Killin has a good
selection of pubs and restaurants, as well as food shops, a tourist center, a launderette,
craft and antique shops, an outdoor activities center, a golf course,
and a bank. All services (except for the golf course) are within five to ten minutes
walking distance of the cottage.
THE LOCATION: Killin is located in the Central Scotland region
called Breadalbane in the midst of superb Highlands scenery: mountains, glens, and lochs.
Killin, often called the "Gateway to the Highlands", sits in the shadow of Ben
Lawers (3,983), one of Scotlands highest mountains. Located at the western end
of beautiful, 15-mile-long Loch Tay where the Rivers Dochart and Lochay enter the lake,
Killin is blessed with a beautiful setting, straddling the Falls of Dochart and surrounded
by the Highlands.
Central Scotland is best known for its bad-boy
favorite son, Rob Roy MacGregor, legendary Scottish patriot, whose infamous cattle
rustling, inter-clan feuding, and Highland hi-jinks made him something of a Celtic Jesse
James to the Crowns red-coated army of Scottish occupation. And, while its
impossible to know where his legend ends and historical reality begins, the Rob Roy story
only adds dimension and color to the already mystical landscape of mountains, glens,
lochs, heather, and gorse of the Scottish Highlands.
ACTIVITIES: Killin is the northeastern entrance to Loch
Lomond & Trossachs National Park, Scotlands first national park. The park
offers excellent walking and hiking, fishing, and cycling in some of Scotlands most beautiful unspoiled
Highland scenery. Central Scotland is the perfect base from which the Highlands, the Inner
Hebrides isles, coastal lands east and west from St. Andrews to the Isle of Iona, and the
great Scottish cities of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, and Inverness can be reached in a
series of day trips by car.
But Central Scotland itself is worthy of
intense exploration. The regions beauty, its friendly, welcoming residents, its castles, golf courses, Highlands festivals, challenging
hiking, salmon fishing (excellent in and around Killin), and many other attractions
provide the central region with the best of Scotland.
