THE ACCOMMODATIONS: Home at First’s principal lodging in Christchurch is a luxury bed and breakfast inn set in a restored Victorian mansion. Each spacious room has been styled individually with fine furnishings. Guests can expect large bathrooms, writing desks, telephones, videos and TV in each suite, as well as bathrobes, slippers, shoeshine kits, toothbrushes, and magazines. Most rooms have their own fireplaces. Although the Christchurch Inn is a non-smoking accommodation, guests may smoke on the verandah and outdoor picnic area.
        Guests receive a gourmet breakfast daily, a complimentary glass of wine or sherry in the evenings, and a selection of teas and coffee throughout the day. The common-use library provides free computer internet facilities.

THE SETTING: The 100+ year old building was originally a sea captain’s home. It is still located in a quiet, tree-lined residential area just 5 minutes from the center of Christchurch. The large house is surrounded by a beautiful garden, blending native trees with rhododendrons and roses, an attractive property in this city known for its gardens.
        The Christchurch Inn has expanded its dining services in recent years to include a Victorian breakfast room, a patio for outdoor dining by the garden waterfall, a Victorian conservatory offering optional candlelight dinners daily. Breakfast, which is provided all guests as part of their lodging, is served at guests’ request.
        The inn's on-site restaurant offers guests fine dining featuring New Zealand specialties such as green-lipped mussels, smoked salmon and freshly baked bread as appetizers, local seafood, lamb, and venison dishes main courses, and desserts including crepes, pineapple delight, and traditional chocolate mousse. The house has a sizeable cellar featuring some of New Zealand’s finest wines. There is also a full-length verandah with a covered barbecue area, complete with pizza oven and dance floor.

THE LOCATION: Home at First’s Christchurch Inn is just minutes from the center of Christchurch, New Zealand’s second city and largest city on the South Island. Christchurch is also a very English city, with a keen interest in gardening. The inn is away from the bustle of the city core, but not so far that you cannot easily join in the fun usually going on in Cathedral Square in the city center or easily stroll through nearby Hagley Park.

ACTIVITIES POSSIBLE: Additionally, easy day trips make it possible to visit Akaroa on the Banks Peninsula—a former French colony with a decidedly different atmosphere—as well as to go whale watching off the Kaikoura Coast north of the Christchurch. Many guests like to ride New Zealand’s most famous train, the Tranzalpine, west into the snowcapped peaks of the Southern Alps and back as a day’s outing. A stay at Home at First’s Christchurch Inn—convenient to the city’s international airport—makes a great finish to a memorable New Zealand travel itinerary.
