NEAR COBH, COUNTY CORK, IRELAND

CASTLE COTTAGE, GREAT ISLAND, COUNTY CORK

THE ACCOMMODATIONS: Castle Cottage is a former stone coach house that has been carefully converted into a modern comfortable accommodation while maintaining its historic ambiance with thick stone walls, fireplaces, open beams, oak doors and floors, and original ironwork filigree.
The two-story cottage includes two double bedrooms and one single bedroom on the upper floor. There are two full bathrooms also on the upper floor. One is ensuite in one of the double bedrooms. On the ground floor, there is a comfortable living room area, plus large, bright kitchen/dining room with amenities including washer and dishwasher.
The cottage has its own garden, double garage, and telephone (limited to incoming calls only). In the back garden is a square medieval fortified tower that had protected early residents of the estate safety from attack by invaders coming up the River Lee.

THE HOSTESS/CARETAKER: The friendly owner/hostess lives next door in her own home with her architect husband. Together they have restored and furnished Castle Cottage with many antique pictures, and a collection of equestrian tack, helping making the cottage a unique, attractive home away from home for guests.

THE SETTING:
This lovely cottage’s country setting is scenic, quiet, remote, and yet convenient for touring southern Ireland. Its close proximity to the sea (via the broad, tidal River Lee just yards away) makes the cottage feel remote. However Castle Cottage is only 25 minutes away from Cork, the largest city in the south of Ireland, and 20 minutes from Cobh (pronounced "Cove"), the historic last landfall of the Titanic and the embarkation point for mass Irish emigration to North America and elsewhere. The cottage is both a romantic hideaway and a convenient base for touring southern Ireland.

Cobh is the historic port town of Cork Harbor and has been designated a Heritage Town by the Irish Tourism Board. Cobh is the closest town to the cottage for groceries, banking, restaurants and other services. Also near Castle Cottage is Fota Island Golf Club, a fine, modern course that welcomes visitors and was the site of the Irish Open Golf Tournament in 2001 and 2002. There is a pub/restaurant less than 5 minutes drive from the cottage for easy lighter meals out.
