WHAT'S A VACATION IN THE BRITISH ISLES FOR GOLFERS WITHOUT A FEW ROUNDS OF GOLF?
For some, a

But not every budgetor every handicapis designed for the long parkland courses

£60/round at either of Celtic Manors championship courses, the pressures on
the golf game and on the purse, but the experience will be rewarding. We know another
Mid-Wales course where the pressures off both your game and your pocketbook. But, at

HISTORY: Local
businessmen formed Builth Wells Golf Club in 1923 using a parcel of farmland just outside
of the town. The initial course was a 9-hole track with a mid-16th century farmhouse
serving as the course clubhouse. In 1973 the club purchased an adjoining farm to expand
the course to 18 holes, which took thirteen years. The reorganized, expanded Builth Wells
Golf Club opened in 1987 with a facility ranked with the best in Mid-Wales eager to
welcome visitors
THE COURSE & SOME MEMORABLE
HOLES: Builth Wells 18-hole course is mildly hilly, but neither very
long nor very steep. The traditional parkland layout is moderately wooded and bunkered.
Waterin the form of ponds, ditches, and a riveraffect several holes on the
course, especially on the shorter back nine. The Builth Wells clubhouse is the oldest
clubhouse in Wales, a 16th century Welsh long house with oak beams and two large
fireplaces in the lounge and dining area. Some notable holes include:
HOLE #9, PAR 3, 160 YARDS:
The first water hole on the course is a medium par-3 requiring flying a pond to an
elevated green.
HOLE #10, PAR 4 (LADIES PAR
5) 339 YARDS: Two river crossings and a dogleg right to an elevated green
make #10 a top-handicap hole at Builth Wells. Short hitters will want to lay up 160 yards
out, between river bends. Longer hitters need almost 200 yards of carry to fly both river
crossings safely. Hitting much further, however, may result in over-hitting the severe
right bend of the dogleg, or require a long, high drive that cuts the sharp corner and
flies a windbreak of trees.
HOLE #15, PAR 3, 136 YARDS
(LADIES: 109 YARDS): Short, straight, and accurate will get you home from
the sharply elevated tee across a hollow to the 20-yard diameter postage stamp green.
Dont be long. The green drops off quickly into the Welsh woods.
HOLE #16, PAR 4, 307 YARDS (LADIES: 264 YARDS): another
dogleg right with a river crossing that very much affects the drive. Short hitters will
want to lay up about 150 yards out, leaving a second shot of an equal distance across the
river to a narrow (15 yards wide) green protected by bunkers front, right and left, trees
back right and a down slope back left. Long hitters need to fly the river and mature trees
almost 200 yards. Make sure you check wind direction here.
THE REGION:
There are some fine golf courses to play and lots more to do in Mid-Wales.
There are excellent golf courses nearby at Celtic Manor, Monmouthshire, and others. Within reach are two Shrines of Golf at
Royal Porthcawl, Royal St. David's and other lesser links
courses on both sides of the Wales/England border. Fishing, touring, exploring castles,
strolling through charming villages, and shopping for Welsh woolens and other crafts are
excellent in this region. Walkers & cyclists will enjoy getting out in the great
scenery along the wild river valleys, and hiking/riding the Brecon Beacons and Black
Mountains.
