Getting around Auckland: One-third of New Zealand's population of just under four million lives in the Auckland area. Roads here are often crowded, and parking is at a premium. Use of buses, ferries, and taxis eliminates driving and parking stress. Use of a rental car permits flexibility and independence for touring the Auckland regionespecially for those wanting to stop and enjoy the scenery, and explore small, out-of-the-way places.

Several tour companies offer daily guided travel around the island, with stops for wine tasting. Renting a car on the island is also possible.
Beyond Waiheke Island in the Hauraki Gulf, several other island destinations reachable by ferry from Auckland attract visitors for bird watching, volcano exploration, hiking and nature walking.
