In 1995, after
100 years as a 9-hole parkland course in Highlands of Central Scotland, the Aberfeldy Golf
Club took a great leap of faith, and leapt north across the River Tay to expand to 18
holes. To do so this dowager (1895) local public course built a unique A-frame suspension
bridge across the Tay to reach a commons in the north side flood plain. What was unique?
The Aberfeldy Golf Clubs "wobbly bridge" was the worlds first glass
reinforced bridge, and as such earned placement in the Guinness Book of Records.
Dont let the high tech bridge mislead
you, however. The Aberfeldy Golf Club remains a friendly, local track where members
heartily welcome visitors, the scenery is great, and the course is neither overpriced nor
overwhelming. And, if the wind is blowing and youre in a golf cart, just crossing
Aberfeldys glass bridge can be worth the greens fee.

THE COURSE AND SOME NOTABLE
HOLES: The original Aberfeldy 9-hole course
changed considerably when it was resculpted into its current 18-hole format in 1993-95.
Still, the course remains essentially flat, occupying the flood plain of the River Tay
below the town of Aberfeldy. The course is also short, offering only one hole over 400
yards in length (the 515-yard par-5 4th), and 5 par-3s (including the start and finishing
holes). The courses setting remains a great attraction, lying, as it does, in the
Tay river valley amidst the splendor of the Highlands of Central Scotland.
THE REGION: Although there are several delightful
coursesincluding the Aberfeldy Golf Clubclose by, Aberfeldy is better known
for its Scotch whisky than its golf. Its Aberfeldy Distillery produces Aberfeldy Single
Malt Whisky in 12 and 15-year-old bottles, and is a major contributor to the Dewars
Blended Scotch sold world-wide by the distillerys current owners, Bacardi. The
distillery is located on the A827 just east of Aberfeldy, and, as Dewars World of
Whisky, is open to visitors (admission charged) at least weekdays year round (except over
two weeks for Christmas and the New Year). Elsewhere, the River Tay and Loch Tay provide
excellent fishing (salmon and trout). Hiking is excellent here, up to the highest reaches
of Ben Lawers, one of Scotlands highest mountains. Shopping for woolens, touring by
car throughout most of Scotland, and visiting castles are popular activities made very
easy from this Central Scotland location.
