THE ACCOMMODATION: Rose Lodge is a complete house on a sizeable lot just outside of the small village of Carney, Republic of Ireland. There is room for up to eight persons in its four double bedrooms. Two of these have double beds and are on the upper (second) floor of the house. There is also a master double bedroom with twin beds and an en suite bath (with tub/shower) on the second floor. A main bathroom with shower is also on the second floor.
The ground floor bedroom (twin beds) has a private access to a full bathroom (with shower) that is also accessible from the hall utility room (where the washing machine is located. A large, well-appointed, handsome eat-in kitchen and comfy living room with color television and fireplace complete the downstairs layout. Outside the house there is private, off-street parking, lawn furniture on the private grounds, and a tumble dryer in a shed.

THE SETTING: Rose Lodge is a two-story house on a rural lane less than a minute from the village of Carney, Ireland. The house is set back from the road on a manicured lot which is both private and quiet. Carney village is little more than a pub, a shop, a restaurant and a post office on the northernmost arm of Sligo Bay, providing safe harbor from the open Atlantic.
Carney is in County Sligo, in the northwest of the Republic of Ireland. Home and gravesite of beloved Irish poet William Butler Yeats, this corner of Sligo combines an inspiring natural beauty with a rich Irish culture. Although the small city of Sligo is just minutes away to the south of Carney, the region is predominantly rural, scenic and historic. The land is hilly and partly wooded. There are mountains and cliffs along the coast and further inland which make the landscape dramatic.

THE HOSTS: The host/owners live in the house next door.
They are friendly, helpful, and eager to see to the comfort of their guests. They willingly provide suggestions for activities, what to see and do in the region, and restaurants.

ACTIVITIES: The broad expanses of nearby Mullaghmore Beach invite swimmers, strollers and fishers just minutes from Rose Lodge. There are many farms, most concerned with dairy cows or sheep production, and fishing villages. There are castle ruins, and thatched cottages in all states of repair. There is always traditional Irish music playing somewhere nearbyin a pub, in a theater, in a town square, or in a festival. There are local open-air markets in most neighboring towns, and Irish wooden crafts, woolen goods, and crystal glass are well-known local products. There’s superb golf, too, here on the rugged coast at the famed championship links courses of Rosses Point, Enniscrone, Bundoran, and Donegal, all within 90 minutes of Carney.
There’s hiking on trails that crisscross the varied landscape. And there’s good fishing at sea, in the bay, and inland in the rivers and lakes of Sligo. There’s good food here, hearty local Irish food—steaks and salmon and lamb and potatoes and garden greens—as well fine foods from the Continent and the ocean. There is a wide variety of shops and restaurants. Besides Sligo town, the very reachable small cities of Galway and Donegal offer good shopping and eating choices.

THE LOCATION: Sligo’s central location makes it a great base to explore Ireland’s Counties Mayo, Donegal, Leitrim, Roscommon and Galway as well as much of Northern Ireland (Ulster). And County Sligo is itself worthy of intensive exploration. The region’s beauty, its friendly, welcoming residents, its castles, golf courses, music, food, easy hiking, fishing, horseback riding and many other attractions combine to provide Sligo with the best of Ireland.
