KITCHEN AT MAY'S CLASSIC CROFT

THE ACCOMMODATION: May's Classic Croft Cottage on the main street of the village of Killin is a 350-year-old preserved historical building. Once the cottage of the village midwife, and later a dairy, this comfy grandmother’s style cottage makes an ideal touring base. All on one level, the cottage has two small bedrooms (one with double bed, one with twin beds), one full bathroom (with shower and tub), a cozy sitting room and a kitchen. The kitchen is light and sunny and opens to a patio and parking area at

the back of the house. Like all Home At First cottages, there is a color TV, hair dryer, microwave, coffee maker, and toaster oven. NEW! May's has free WIFI accessibility.

HOSTESS: The friendly hostess, who lives nearby in the village (population 700), sees to it that guests are welcomed, well-oriented, and well looked after.

HIGHLY RATED: May's Classic Croft Cottage is among Home At First’s highest-rated accommodations in Central Scotland by guest review.

In our customers' own words—
-
"Killin is a beautiful, central location — a small village  where one has a chance to meet home folks in the shops, restaurants, and markets on a relaxed, friendly basis. After two weeks it began to feel like home." -
                                                                                     —Shirley Barnes, New Mexico

THE SETTING: The village of Killin, often called the "Gateway to the Highlands", sits in the shadow of Ben Lawers, one of Scotland’s highest mountains. A popular tourist destination, Killin is on the western end of beautiful, 15-mile-long Loch Tay, where the Rivers Dochart and Lochay enter the lake. Killin is blessed with a beautiful setting, straddling a waterfall and surrounded by the Highlands. The town has a good selection of pubs and restaurants, as well as food shops, a tourist center, a launderette ("laundromat" in American), and a bank. All are within 5 minutes walking distance of May's Classic Croft Cottage. The house is on the main street, but traffic noise is minimal due to thick walls and insulated glass windows, even when Killin is at its busiest on summer weekends. Just outside of town is the 9-hole Killin Golf Course, an excellent facility overlooking Loch Tay. Just east of Loch Tay is the classic 18-hole TAYMOUTH CASTLE COURSE.

THE LOCATION: Killin is an easy day trip drive from Scotland’s east and west coasts, as well as the cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh. Even Inverness and the Isle of Skye are within comfortable longer day trip distance, making this cozy village the perfect center for travel throughout most of Scotland.
Killin is located in the central Scotland Highlands in a region called Breadalbane with of superb scenery: mountains, fields, wild rivers, and lochs. The grand geography of Breadalbane has been witness to some of Scotland’s great history. Nearby was the home of Scotland’s bad-boy favorite son,
Rob Roy MacGregor. Rob Roy’s infamous cattle rustling, inter-clan feuding, and Highland high jinks made him something of a Celtic Jesse James to the Crown’s red-coated army of Scottish occupation. And, while it's impossible to know where his legend ends and historical reality begins, the Rob Roy story

only adds dimension and color to the already mystical landscape of mountains, glens, lochs, heather, and gorse of the Scottish Highlands.

ACTIVITIES: Killin’s central location makes it the perfect base from which the Highlands, the Inner Hebrides isles, coastal lands east and west, and the great Scottish cities of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, and Inverness can be reached in a series of day trips by car. See two sample day trips: Sail Loch Etive and See Highland Seals, and Hiking over the Devil's Staircase from Glen Coe. Our 100+ page accompanying "Scotland Activities Guide" provides dozens of suggestions of all kinds.
But Killin’s immediate surroundings are themselves worthy of intense exploration. The region’s beauty, its friendly, welcoming residents, its castles,
9-HOLE and 18-HOLE golf courses, Highlands festivals, challenging hiking, salmon fishing (excellent in and around Killin), scenic cycling, and many other attractions provide the region with the best of Scotland.

The "Devil's Staircase", highest and best-known section of The West Highland Way. This portion of the long-distance route is easily done as a day-hike for visitors staying in Cental Scotland, and is one of many walks of all levels of challenge described in Home At First's "Scotland Activity Guide".
