         The poets Wordsworth and Coleridge first brought this sparsely populated, remote part of northwest England into the public imagination. Almost two centuries on, their songs of praise of the Lake District's lovely landscape of lakes, hills and quaint villages still apply.          While romantic poets like Wordsworth may have fallen into disfavor, the stature of the Lake District has only increased. The many walking paths always offer tranquility, and sometimes exciting challenge, but never dull repetition.          Explore pretty villages, starting with Hawkshead: close to all Home At First Lake District lodgings. Poke around craft shops. Ride the lake boats. Go to market. Ride up and down the hills. Become a regular in the local pub. Find a new favorite restaurant daily.
