AT FIRST's West
Country
cottages make an ideal base for discovering some of the best of English history, culture,
and geography. Two coastlines
north Devon coast along the Bristol Channel, and the south Devon coast
along the English Channel
are within an hour or so of the cottages. Their beaches, resorts towns,
fishing villages, coves, walking paths, lighthouses, dramatic cliffs, and magnificent
headlands offer some of the finest coastal exploring in Britain.
Devon's principal city, Plymouth, is reached in
about twenty minutes from
HOME
AT FIRST's Devonshire
cottages. From here the Pilgrims set off for America, Sir Francis Drake made the world's
oceans British lakes, and the Royal Navy continues to maintain a presence. |

Inland, the sweeping high moorlands of Dartmoor National Park dominate west central Devon
and offer exemplary walking and touring in the wildest parts of southern England. Between
the coasts and the moorlands are a myriad of convoluted valleys, each settled with ancient
hamlets and villages, many featuring classic English thatched cottages, pubs with great
character, and restaurants with great food and
drink.
There are hundreds of activities and
attractions we have not mentioned
from steam railways to D-Day monuments to eccentric museums to pony
trekking. Most importantly, we think Devon offers visitors the opportunity to discover the
traditional England of their imagination, and the surprising England of the present. |

"What
a great home base it proved to be for our Devon and Cornwall day
trip wanderings. As you undoubtedly know, the driving on the
back roads in Devon and Cornwall is not for the faint of heart,
but I find it to be a delightful challenge — and it does serve
the purposed of slowing things down and encouraging
polite/thoughtful driving habits which is not all bad."

TAKE THE KIDS!
|
Should we bring the kids along? Are
you kidding?! There are great parks,
steam train rides and
boat rides better than in any amusement park, and, oh yes, amusement parks, too. Want
history to come alive for your kids? Why not take them where so
much history has been made? Worried about being away from McDonald's and TV? Don't be.
Kids of all ages can get their burgers, fries and CNN all over Britain. And, who knows,
maybe the kids will discover new tastes: fish 'n chips, ice lollies, and
the fun of exploring thousands of
years of English history from Stonehenge to Tintagel Castle to the
Industrial Revolution.
