THE ACCOMMODATIONS: Built halfway up a steep hillside of native bush, Home At First’s Coromandel Inn features a commanding, western facing view of the broad Firth of Thames. The Mediterranean-style lodge is furnished with hand-crafted furniture of native New Zealand woods. The inn offers four well-appointed ground-floor rooms with picture window views of the firth—the bay of the Hauraki Gulf that separates the Coromandel Peninsula from the main spine of the North Island of New Zealand. Rooms have excellent beds and large en suite bathrooms with showers, coffee/tea making facilities, TV, ceiling fans, electric

blankets and winter heating, and views for the cool months. Upstairs from the ground floor guest rooms are the inn’s common rooms: a spacious lounge and patio with TV, VCR, stereo, library, open fireplace, bar service and grand views of the sea and hills.

Each room has its own furnished patio.

Delicious breakfasts (included in the price) are served every day in the cheery upstairs breakfast room (also with a view of the firth) or (weather permitting) outdoors on the second floor terrace. Lunches (extra cost option) may ordered in advance or on-site. Guests may also pre-reserve dinner (6:30-8:00PM) at the inn’s licensed restaurant which features an α la carte menu that includes New Zealand Lamb, Beef, Coromandel seafood, and a variety of appetizers and desserts and a list of quality New Zealand wines.

THE WELCOME: A husband/wife team owns and operates the inn and its restaurant. The hostess has Maori heritage and welcomes guests’ interest in New Zealand’s native Maori culture. The host is an expert in the Coromandel Peninsula, and is eager to help guests get the most out of their exploration of this unique New Zealand region.

THE SETTING: Built on an historic Maori pa site (fortified place), the inn is surrounded by native bush rich in Maori history. The nearest village is along the coast road below the inn. There is a village store, and a lovely stretch of public bathing beach. Two of the peninsula’s principal towns are within 20 minutes of the inn.

THE LOCATION & POSSIBLE ACTIVITIES: Home At First’s Coromandel Inn is an ideal location to base your stay while exploring the Coromandel Peninsula. Not far from the inn are opportunities for day hikes, gardens to visit, local arts & crafts shopping, a fascinating tourist railway, local museums, boutique wineries, salt water beaches, and fishing on the firth. Crossing the mountainous spine of the peninsula is a challenging, scenic drive that provides sweeping views of both coasts. Once on the eastern side of the divide you quickly descend to the rugged Pacific coast. Here you will find more interesting towns and villages and numerous swimming beaches and coves, including the unique Hot Water Beach where at low tide you can dig a hot tub in the sand that quickly fills from underground thermal springs. The best golf on the peninsula is also on the Pacific coast: The Dunes Golf Resort on Matarangi Beach near Whitianga.
